Virginia Marriage Records Search
Virginia marriage records are not open to the public for 25 years after the event at the state level and can only be accessed by the registrant or immediate family members. Virginia marriage records are also managed at the county/city level.
For marriage records since January 1853 to the present, copies of Virginia marriage certificates are available for purchase from both the State Office of Vital Records and the Clerk of the Circuit Court’s Office in the county or city where the marriage license was issued. Marriage records prior to January 1853 are only available directly from the Сounty/City Clerk of the Circuit Court. Copies of Virginia marriage records are also available from the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
Certified copies of Virginia marriage records are available by mail order for $12 with a check or money order made payable to the State Health Department, along with a photocopy of acceptable ID and a completed application sent to the following address:
