California Marriage Records Search
The state of California offers two types of marriage licenses: public and confidential.
For public marriage records (except for the years 1905-1948, 1987-1997, and 2002-2010), informational copies of California marriage certificates are typically available directly from the state. For other years or recent marriages (within the first six months), it's likely that the marriage records will only be available directly from the county where the license was issued.
Confidential marriage records are only available from the county in which the license was issued and only to the two people named on the marriage certificate (i.e. the married couple). In this case, other public records and related background checks (which include known associates) may still be able to lend a clue as to marital status (or - at a minimum - cohabitation).
When available, copies of California marriage certificates are available by mail order only for $15 with a check made payable to CDPH Vital Records along with a completed application sent to the following address:
