marriage/divorce records in VIRGINIA

i'm hoping that someone here will be able to help me out in my quest of locating marriage/divorce records in the state of virginia (specifically arlington and alexandria counties)....have tried several avenues with no success...is it true that i am unable to access this information if i don't have the exact date of the supposed marriages and subsequent divorces (if they did actually even take place)? any assistance would be greatly appreciated...thanks...
