Looking for Biological Dad

I have been trying to find my dad for over 30 years. I just recently came across his social secuirty number. I have written to the social security office, to have them forward a letter. So far, no answer. I do not know if he he alive or deceased. He will be 78 years old in a few days. I checked with one internet site and was told his ss # is active. They then wanted $200.00 to search out more info. I do not have that kind of money. I feel like I may never find him before it is too late. Anyone have any suggestions?

You can check to see if the Social Security Administration has a death reported on him here: http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/

I've already checked and he is not on the social security death index.
